LTC G. Larry Maxwell, MD Director

Dr. Maxwell received his undergraduate degree with honors in chemistry and his medical degree with honors from the University of North Carolina. He completed his internship and residency with the military at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. For his fellowship, he trained in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Maxwell is currently a staff gynecologic oncologist as well as the Director of the Gynecologic Disease Center at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.


Dr. Maxwell has been the author and co-author of over 65 manuscripts and chapters. He has been recognized with six awards by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists as well as the Presidents Award by the Society of Gynecologic Oncology for his research. Dr. Maxwell's research interests have predominantly involved endometrial carcinogenesis as well as thromboembolism prevention in cancer. He has previously received the Surgeon General's award, an honor that is annually bestowed on only four army officers (one award at the rank of captain, major, lietnenant colonel, and colonel) in the entire United States Army, Dr. Maxwell is an adjunct investigator in the Laboratory of Biosystems and Cancer at the Cancer Institute, where he oversees his own research activities.


Dr. Maxwell is the Director of Gynecologic Surgical Services for the National Cancer Institute in a memorandum of understanding between the National Cancer Institute and the U.S. Army that enables provision of gynecologic surgical care to patients on NCI Gynecologic protocols. Dr. Maxwell serves as the Vice-Chair of the IRB for the United States Military Cancer Institute as well as the Principal Investigator for the following three research consortia.

  1. "Molecular biology and prevention of Endometrial Gancer". Endometrial cancer genetics program that involves Walter Reed, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Cancer Institute, Duke University, Evanston Northwestern, and Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Oversight is provided by th Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program at Ft Detrick. 2001-2005.
  2. "Gynecologic Cancer Center for the Study of Racial Disparities". This program project focuses on identifying social, cultural, psychological and biological etiologies for racial disparities among underserved populations with gynecologic cancer. This research involves Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Ohio State University with oversight from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. 2004-2006.
  3. "Gynecologic Disease Program". This comprehensive program project involves early detection, molecular profiling, prevention and treatment of different gynecologic several diseases. The partners in this program include Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Windber Research Institute, Georgetown University, and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Center with oversight from the Technology and Telemedicine Research Center at the Military Medical Research and Material Command, Ft Detrick. 2004-2006.

LTC G. Scott Rose, MD

Dr. Rose is the Director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology as well as the Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Subspecialty Fellowship training program, both at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He has also held the position as the Principal Investigator for the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) since 1998. From this research group affiliation, the division is able to offer our patients over 80 clinical and basic science related research protocols.


Dr. Rose is a graduate of the University of Kansas. His postgraduate education includes, a medical degree from Texas Tech University School of Medicine in 1987, residency training at Tripler Army Medical Center Obstetrics and Gynecology residency-training program from 1987-1991, and Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship training at the University of California, Irvine in Orange, California from 1994-1998.


Dr. Rose is double boarded in gynecologic oncology and general Ob-Gyn, and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists. Dr. Rose will serve as the Deputy Director for the Gynecologic Disease Program at Walter Reed.

LTC George Peoples, MD

Dr. Peoples received his undergraduate degree from the United States Military Academy (West Point) and attended medical school at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a three year research fellowship at Harvard. Following completion of his residency, he received subspecialty training in surgical oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.


Since his training in the Laboratory of Biologic Cancer Thereapy in Boston, Dr. Peoples has maintained an interest in immunology and vaccine research as it applies to malignancies. He currently directs the Cancer Vaccine Development Laboratory on the campus of the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, and is running four cancer vaccine clinical trials at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Windber Medical Center, Windber, PA. He has published over 30 papers on these topics in peer-reviewed journals. He also serves as the Chief of Surgical Oncology, WRAMC.

Dr. John Risinger, PhD

CDR John C. Elkas, M.D., J.D., Staff Physician, Division of Gynecologic Oncology

Dr Elkas received his medical degree from New York Medical College. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Immediately following, he completed a fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology at University of California, Los Angeles/ Cedars-Sinai Medical Centers.


Currently he is a board certified attending physician at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval Medical Center in the department of obstetrics and gynecology, division of gynecologic oncology. Dr. Elkas also has received his Juris Doctorate from the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America and is an active member of the American Health Lawyers Association. Dr. Elkas is a member of multiple professional societies and has presented both basic science and clinical research at national scientific meetings as well as having published his work in multiple peer reviewed journals.

CDR Mildred R. Chernofsky, MD

Dr. Chernofsky received her undergraduate degree magna cum laude in biology from the University of Puerto Rico and attended medical school at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She was incorporated into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society due to her excellence in acedemic achievement while in medical school. She completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. Following completion of her residency, she received subspecialty training in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Since then, Dr. Chernofsky joined the staff of the Gynecologic Oncology Division at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and has been clinically very active in taking care of patients with gynecologic malignancies, as well as complicated gynecologic surgical care. She is also the Chief of Colposcopy Services at WRAMC, directing the evaluation and treatment of patients with cervical dysplasia.


Dr. Chernofsky holds the position as the Co-Principal Investigator for the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG), thereby facilitating enrollment and participation of patients with gynecologic malignancies in nationally available research protocols. She is involved in collaboration in clinical research, as well as medical student and resident education. Dr. Chernofsky holds an academic position as Assistant Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).
